ALBERT EDWARD DUFFILL

INTRODUCTION

In 1940 my grandfather Albert Barr gave me a note book containing the names of people who had lived and were still living in North Dalton from 1890 to 1940. In the note book he also described several interesting events which had occurred in North Dalton during those years.

I found it all to be very interesting – so much so that I decided to attempt to compile a similar record of people and events from 1940-1990.

I was brought to North Dalton over 75 years ago when I was six months old, So in theory I should be very capable to carrying out my intentions since I have lived here all my life, but I have one handicap – my memory leaves a lot to be desired, so I am going to ask questions and rely on other people’s memories. In the following pages I will record names and events as I remember them, then I will ask various people to read what I have written in the hope that they can and will correct mistakes I have made and fill in any blanks I have left. This will of course mean that I may have to make corrections, but rather than rewrite whole pages I will where possible leave the pages as originally Written and just add the correct information, because my intention also is, God willing and given the time, to make a corrected edited copy and pass it on to either the Clerk of the Parish Council, or ask for it to be kept in the Church Safe, but wherever I decide to put it I would like it to be available for anyone who wishes to examine it to be able to do so.

The original record I hope will be duly passed on to someone living in the village who will take care of it and also make it available to anyone who may wish to see it, presuming of course that a) I manage to complete it and b) that anyone is interested in it.

Just a further point. I have no intention of doing any searching through archives or libraries for information, but for the benefit of anyone who is interested in the history of North Dalton and would like to as it were put some “meat on the bones”, The Rev.d John Lamin did a lot of research into the history of this village about 1923-24. I have wondered if his notes are in the Church safe. Also I have been told that either Anthony Byass and his sisters or relations did a history in about 1955. Also Mary Burks did an excellent project about the social and economic history of North Dalton as part of her studies at Nottingham University. Also Larry Greenwood has done some searching in archives and unearthed quite a lot of interesting information.

This history cannot of course be completed because history is a never ending thing. Today will be history tomorrow. Hence the various appendices.

Next page

NORTH DALTON 1890-1990 WITH LATER ADDITIONS TO 1995 A PERSONAL HISTORY BY MR.
