Looking back – Life in North Dalton 1920s-1940s

The sound recordings and images here are reproduced by kind permission of Ray Williams, who produced the original CD in 2009.

Few can say today that they have spent much or all of their lives in one place.  here is a recording of eight people who have lived in the Yorkshire Wolds village of North Dalton longer than most.  Their memories go back to a time very different to today.  No running water.  No electricity.  No flush toilets.  A life of work on farms, or service to the community.  They experienced the village occupied by allied troops, evacuees and the “Free French”.  A village boasting three shops, two pubs, blacksmiths, tailors, cobblers and two chapels.

We are grateful to them for braving the microphones and tape recorders to share their memories with us.
